while using environmentally responsible materials.

Abydos is a handcrafted furniture and accessories company located just outside of Taos, New Mexico in the village of Talpa. This area, nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, has a unique tradition in furniture and folk art, which reflects several centuries of blending three different cultures, and is now home to an impressive number of highly skilled artisans. This gives Abydos the ability to offer creative design, rooted in a rich past and high quality craftsmanship. We offer four distinct lines of furnishings; the Chimayo Style, Taos Country Style, Mennonite Style and our Rustic Line. The pieces are all hand crafted using mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail joints in the drawers and are finished by hand. Most are made from Pacific Alder wood, though we do offer Cherry wood and Walnut wood for a significant up-charge. Our Rustic Line uses Antique Barnwood (usually Pine or Fir) and local Juniper as the main wood types. The iron stands are handforged in Taos to order. The pulls are handforged in New Mexico as well. The copper and tinwork featured in many of the designs are punched, patina'd and hand-painted in our shop.

Abydos has been building high quality furnishings in the Taos, NM area for more than 15 years. Abydos was the creation of artist, Teresa Swayne. Teresa utilized the local craftspeople to build and finish her unique designs. In the mid-1990's Teresa sold Abydos to Dave and Andrea Delling. Dave and Andrea grew the business considerably during the time they owned it. The majority of Abydos pieces were built then, from 1996 - 2001. Like many small business, the disasters of Sept. 11, 2001 brought Abydos to a stand still. It was at this time that Clay Cousins and Anne Delling (Dave's daughter), made the decision to purchase Abydos. We knew we had the necessary experience (and energy) to keep the company going. The things that have remained constant throughout the years are the commitment to quality and customer service. Many of the designs still reflect Teresa's original vision, though we are constantly adding to our fantastic pool of designs. We document each piece we build and assign it a tracking number. When our furniture becomes collectable, these steps will be invaluable for identifying the pieces. We feel truly blessed to have to honor of building custom furniture for our wonderful customers.
